Re: repeted power pack failure

Sounds like the input voltage is varying. Either too high or to low and the power packs have to over come the deviation. It might be right at idle when you test but at higher RPMS the voltage might spike.

I would Guess it is either the stator or regulator. It would depend on if the voltage that supplies the power to the power pack is regulated or not. Just a guess with out more info.

Re: repeted power pack failure

when i got the boat the fuel pump was bad so could not run wide open. since fuel pump replacement i have blown 2 power packs but on left side only. a couple of wide open runs then a low speed miss then left bank quits. rechecked and power pack is bad again

the state voltage is 152 volts on left and 175 on right

Have you made sure that all mounting surfaces are clean and corrosion free and that all electrical connectors are good? A bad electrical connection can cause all kinds of issues too.

cleaned tightened grounds and checked all connections

Unhook the black/yellow wire at the pack
and check for any voltage.
Check it with the key off and on.
Any stray voltage can bad For the pack.
Does spark come back after it sets
and cools off ?

Re: repeted power pack failure

unhooking black yellow doesnot help.i cant find any stray voltage. you can move pack to other side and still wont work. and good pack will work on bad side. waiting also doesnot help, once it fails it is history

Re: repeted power pack failure

did you check for voltage on the black/yellow with the ign. switch on and with it off as suggested by Big Flop?... Seems I read here that CDI says any voltage over like .5 volt on the kill wire can damage the powerpack. I'd suggest you contact CDI either by email or phone and ask their oponion of causes for multiple failures to the powerpack on one side only. They have helpful customer service folks.

as of now i have 2.4 milivolts but who is to say what happens while on lake. i will give cdi a call. would you not have stray voltage on both wires since they are common and only the left side fails.

Did you check the black/yellow to the other
pack? I think your right and will see the same
millivolts being common.

When you call cdi ask them about
a bad coil back feeding into the pack.
Never seen it but have heard of it
being suspect pack killer?

Re: repeated power pack failure

that would seem logical to me,but could there be some point in the circuit of the kill wire that the left side is picking up stray voltage while the right side isn't? I really don't know if this is even possible, just offering up possibilities.

i,m pretty much stumped. my son has a friend who is coming tonight, he is a certified johnson mechanic, and i will pass on all info i can. its is getting expensive trying to fix myself. thanks all

One other wild thing. Make sure the timer base for that side has no shorts in it.

Check the isolation diode in the right side pack. Charge coil voltage too far apart, should be almost same. You using a peak reading meter? All connections should checked.

I am having a similar problem with my johnson 90 left side power pack has failed twice now. Did you ever find out the problem? this is getting expensive

we found some used parts and that solved the problem. we replaced the stator and timing base. everything has worked since. we eventually replaced the timing base with new and just recently the regulator was also replaced but that fixed charging problem not related to power pack failure. i think it was the stator that somehow was putting to much voltage at high speed to left side but it is just a guess. i hope that helps it is an expensive problem. we went through 3 packs before solving.
