I also ordered a 40109 which is bigger and better IMO than the 40288.
Pump would not prime itself. The builtin check valve failed. It must be perfect or it leaks back on every throw of the plunger. Unscrew the long nut on the inlet. Inside is a brass - rubber check valve with tiny spring which pushes rubber seal against nut. The whole valve thing is fit together as a unit, but the lower brass housing might be stuck in the nut when you remove it. With mine, the rubber edge swelled and it was hanging up unable to close. And the metal seal ring area of the nut looked a little rusty.
First thing, I used a 5/8 wood dowel and dab of ceramic stove top cleaner and spun the wood dowel against the metal surface ring, that cleaned up the seal to like new. That dowel size is a perfect fit into the nut. The scraped clean the inner surface where the brass housing seats as it had a small buildup.
Second, I put some stove compound on a ceramic plate and rubbed the sealing surface of the rubber seal washer, using my fnger to push it against the plate. That cleaned it and also polished it flat.
Third, I used 120 grit sand paper and holding the rubber seal ground the edge all the way round smaller, as it had swelled too wide to fit inside the brass spring support arms.
Fourth, did the same with the flat brass housing to clean it up with compound against the ceramic plate.
Fifth, reassembled valve with a tiny bit of grease on the spring where it sits on the metal help hold it in place. The little tangs are a tight fit into the lower brass ring.
Sixth, put a tiny smear of grease on the inner rubber seal ring of the nut and on the nut threads, screwed back on.
7th, tested it by back blowing air with mouth and the end of the facet 74-micron filter in water, and no bubbles, suck on it air flows just one way.
Pretty confident it will now work again. But like I said, I also bought another pump!
I cant load pics says site admin has to resolve, so here is google photos album
