I have a 16', flat bottom, Old Town canoe that is in need of repairs. It was given to me by a friend. It has many gouges in the hull and some places that are covered with some sort of mesh material. Also the interior has a couple of cracks. The cracks on the interior don't look like they are through the hull, it looks like the tan layer inside has bubbled up. I want to resurface the exterior of the canoe to make it look nice again. I don't think it takes on any water. If anyone could help me with a process or an online manual. Many out there to repair small gouges or scratches, but I cannot find a complete resurface process. Thanks

If it's that polyethylene/plastic material then it's tough to repair since most repair materials won't stick to it. Fiberglass and aluminum has many more repair options. good Luck!:)

Re: Repair of an Old Town Canoe

Any hope?? I hope.

Nope,... Not really..... That's been Beaten to hard, 'n drug across rocks, she's just Worn away...

You still haven't said which model it is, so We can figure out Which plastic it is....
But,...
From the Pic.s it appears to be Oltonar/ Royalex plastic, 'n not the PolyLink3....

The Process for repairs is to sand it, polarize it with a propane flame, then epoxy it...
Kevlar, or other fabrics other than glass are used...
It'll cost ya 'bout Twice the value of a New boat to fix that 1, 'n it'll be heavier than 'ell.....

Sorry....

That canoe has seen better days!, and it would take a lot to make it pretty, but it can be made functional. I'd sand it all down to the bare whatever, then use fiberglass, epoxy, hull paint, whatever to seal it up....then go enjoy it!....but I wouldn't want to do the Amazon River in it!:)...worst case, fill it with dirt and plant flowers in it!

Yah, I'm with Bondo there. She sure looks like a Roylex boat that has sat in the sun for way too long. I hate to say it but she's a gonner.

If you really wanted to try to just get it to float (for fun only) you could smear something like 3M 4000 all over that stuff. I wouldn't venture very far from shore though! No more Boundary Waters expeditions for that ol girl.
