repair 1984 evinrude control box

Plastic part on shift lever inside control box broke, finally found replacement part, but can't remove rotating shift/throttle plate to install replacement part underneath. We removed central screw (that appears to attach to shift lever outside the box), and other apparent screws, but rotating plate won't detach. How is this plate removed so the part that fits underneath can be installed?

it should lift out. has a sleave that goes over the shaft, work with it. on some there is a screw thru the shift handle from the out side, hidden under a cover plate. go to this site, cilk engine diagram, then OB Accessories, follow prompts. to your control

The central screw holds the handle to the round plate. It is a tapered fit so it takes a bit of persuasion to get it off. Put the screw back in (finger tight), then back it off a couple of turns. Then give the screw head a whack with a hammer. The handle will pop loose, then you can go ahead and remove the screw and handle
