if you fail to properely prep the trailer the new paint will just fly right off. A big angle grinder with a wheel brush will take it off in a damn hurry.

Re: Repainting boat trailer

I've restored quite a few cars over the years and started out using wire wheels on the frames prior to painting with POR-15. After years of picking wires out of my clothing, hair and skin (youch!) I found FLAP DISKS. They blow wire wheels out of the water for most tasks and they can grind welds too. Plus, you don't get flying wires embedded in your skin. I use an angle SANDER versus a grinder because they operate at much lower RPMs. Wire wheels still have their place but much fewer uses in my garage than before the flap disk discovery.

Re: Repainting boat trailer

I want to repaint my trailer but it already has a coat of white paint on it. The paint is in good shape and doesnt look bad, i just want to make it black so it doesnt always look so dirty and grungy. Should i sand off all the old paint and use rustoleum black spray paint or can i just paint over the white? Its a freshwater trailer and will never see the salt water. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In the areas where no rust is present you can use some course sandpaper to knock off the dirt and grime. Then whipe it down and repaint in the color of your choice.

If you have areas of heavy rust you will need to wire brush the scaling off to make it smooth.

I used Rust Oleum Satin Black and a paint brush. It cured rock hard like a nail polish but needs a second coat because the paint doesn't self level. I'm thinking of a outdoor grade satin black as my second coat in the spring but for now... Here is what the rust oleum looks like:

Sorry for the picture size - I'll knock it down when I get home from work today

POR-15 for painting trailers hands down.

This stuff is tough as nails, and has positivly stopped rust in our harsh salt water enviroment.
