Anybody know where I could rent a cabin cruiser for a weekend? The wife and I are interested in buying, but not sure how much we would enjoy the lake or river life. We would like to give it a try for a weekend before we commit.

Since I have to guess where you live, a few selections from all over the world;

A lot of marinas rent boats on a half day or daily basis, but around here they're mostly pontoon boats & small runabouts. What size boat are you looking to buy & how much experience do you have operating one?

I'm thinking about a "pocket cruiser", maybe 24'-27'. With a galley, not just a cuddy cabin, single engine, dual axle, not triple axle. And I'm not planning to rent a slip at least initially. I'm planning to tow it from home on a weekend. I have driven a variety of rental houseboats about a half dozen weekends over about the past 25 years. I have a bass boat that I've driven a couple dozen times in the past year. I have plenty of trailering experience but not a lot of boating experience.

Maybe you've already considered this, but my first thought is something like that is going to require a pretty serious tow vehicle.

Then, the idea of a single engine, unless you are thinking inboard/outboard, brings thoughts of the experience required when docking or loading the boat on a trailer. On a straight inboard, that's not a thought to be taken lightly. It's very "do-able" but there is a definite knack required for that kind of boat handling.

I would want twins on a pocket cruiser vs a single, especially if trying to dock

the weight of the boat determines the number of axles

the boat you want may not be something you can rent (and the boat you can rent may not be what you want to buy)

towing a 24-27 pocket cruiser will require a significant tow vehicle.

No idea where to rent, but we had a 25' last season and a 26' this season. Both were single I/Os, as were a lot in this size range. Depending on the boat you get, a normal newer 1/2 ton should tow it ok. We towed/launched our 25'er two times a week last year, but this is about the size where you may want to entertain a slip.
