Renaming a boat?

Hey all,

Just a curiousity question here...

I have been doing some research on renaming my boat... when I bought it, it had a silly name that I abhor... stuck on the side with cheap mailbox letters...

Some people are superstitious about taking out a boat that isn't named at all, and from what I have read, its even more taboo to rename a boat that has already been named...

That being said I have a few questions:

1. What are your thoughts on renaming a boat? (Ok/Not ok)
2. If a boat is renamed, do you think it would bring about bad luck?
3. What procedure would you use to rename the boat (vessel)?
(found this one on line, thought it was kind of neat: http://www.boat-trucklettering.com/rename.shtml)

Finally, and most importantly, I am looking for name suggestions...

I have a 1985 15ft. Riviera Bowrider... Its white with a royal blue stripe... and I want to somehow incorporate my Son's name (Ryan), into the boat name...

Any thoughts or suggestions? (I came up with one, but the mrs didnt like it, Ryan's Hope)

Have fun with it, and look forward to your replies! :D

/edit I forgot to mention, that I also gutted the boat down to the outer hull, and completely rebuilt it from scratch, new transom, floor, relaid inner hull, put the top hull back on, built in a dash, and re-gel-coated, so its "kinda" like a new boat if that matters...

Ryan's Ride.

I too have a previously named boat. While on the river I got into a conversation about renaming. They went on about the pomp and cicurmstance to name and christian the new name. Sounds fun.

Let me know if you find the "correct" procedure.

Search the threads here, it is perfectly normal to rename your vessel. you just need to do it correctly or the water gods are gonna be REALLY P*** OFF

It would have to be one good name for me to keep someone else's.

It's just a name and it's just a boat do what you want.

Remember though might be a fun party, I mean ceremony.

Will B. Ryans

One I always liked was my uncle's who named his pontoon after his son Rick. It was named "Rixraft".

Re: Renaming a boat?

Thanks for the replies all!

I love the suggestions, and will think about what one I would like to use...

I'll keep looking for a proper "renaming" procedure... I found how the USN names its boats... but that requires a chaplain and seems a bit drastic...

As for the "proper" procedure, everything I indicated says that the procedure I posted already, is the "proper" way, although I guess technically unoffical.. here's two more links to basically the same information:

http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/rename.htm

http://www.answers.com/topic/renaming-a-boat

I'll probably just go with some modification of this general procedure, and make it a family affair, I think it will be fun!

Just hope my son enjoys the suprise, he has no idea I have this boat, much less that I rebuilt it for him! His birthday is in a month, and I should have all the final details worked out by then! :D

Thanks again for the suggestions!

I grew up in Newfoundland and was a fan of a local Irish band called RYAN'S FANCY. I think it would be a fitting name for your boat.
