I just bought a Legend 18' Extreme which has the controls for a Mercury 4 stroke. I am replacing it with controls for a 2 stroke 60Evinrude E-tec. I'm having a problem figuring out how to remove the control box and lever. Any help would be appreciated.

If you have access to the rear of the bulkhead where it's mounted it'll help. The Quicksilver 2000 and 3000 mount with 3 bolts which are hidden from operators view until you remove some asthetic effects. The 2000 is outboard bulkhead mount, cables exposed, with the fast idle lever on the top rear. The 3000 is in the bulkhead mounted, cables behind the bulkhead recognized by big, black, plastic button you push to disconnect the shifter from the shift/throttle for fast idle.

The Mercury control box can not be removed without removing the control handle. To remove the handle, you use a screwdriver to pry out the center button, usually breaking it in the process. It is a push on button not really designed to come off so you will need to use excessive force. Inside the cavity there will be a brass 5/8 nut. use a deep socket to remove it and the handle will come off. This exposes the mounting screws which hold the whole smash together.

When I removed my 3000 to replace with a 2000 I encountered what you said. I wound up with a recip saw and metal cutting blade cutting the handle shaft off so that I could get to the rest of it to get the bolts out and that was on a 2000 year model boat kept indoors or under cover and never used in salt water.

Good hunting.
