I picked up a motor that was on a moored boat. the TNT unit i took apart as well as the stern bracket. I have been trying to degreease all the parts and have even used some simple green( worked pretty good) but some of that light brown water stains are giving me trouble getting off, especially the nooks and crannys...

I dont have access to a sand blaster right now.. i want to paint the parts up nice, before i reassemble.

what is a good product or way to clean the stains off...is there anything that dissolves this stain?? i had to have to RUB every square inch in all those tight places....

of course my motor is WHITE

thanks

Re: removing the mooring stains..

Paint the stains white

what???

thats why there are thousands of motors with crummy paint jobs chipping and peeling away!!!!!!!!

nothing worse than a guy who repaints and just sprays everything...bolts ,joints, wires, grommets, seals, whatever they can!!!!

I got this thing this far apart, i am gonna spend a little time doing it right....but Id like to make it more efficient than it has been, thus i am asking for help...

there has to be someone who has cleaned a few of these brownish water stains with a trick they know

I think Cookin' was Kiddin...

Seriously Bob, those hard water buildup stains are usually removed with an acid, ie hull cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner works or a mix of muiratic acid and water. Spray it on there, light scrubbing and rinse.

What dockwrecker said, that is about the only way. I have to clean them off my boat every time it goes in the local water for the weekend.

Re: removing the mooring stains..

Three days ago I was contemplating how to remove all the crud from my drive.
The little wire wheel attachment for a dremel works great for getting into the tight spots. Takes the crud and sea growth etc..right off!
Purple power degreaser works very well also. Soaked the whole thing down and scrubbed with a stiff bristle tooth brush. Sanded with 400grit thoroughly and washed again.....Wiped down with acetone a few times, masked critical areas off and then primed it.
This process worked well.
Good luck.

Easy off oven cleaner works well too...just don't get it on your hand.

You said you bought a white motor with brown water stains and "I dont have access to a sand blaster right now.. i want to paint the parts up nice, before i reassemble." One of the functions of paint is to correct color, whether changing color or restoring color. If you know what you are doing, it won't peel or chip. And you don't have to paint your nuts and grommets and other parts, unless that's your thing.
Notice I said paint over stains on the motor. Not hull, not barnacles and seaweed.
Because if you manage to remove the stain from the surface of the motor, you will be left with a white motor, and won't be painting.

Or am I missing something? Is this a restoration job on a classic boat? are you not painting it, after all?
