I'm removing the drive to change the bellows and bearing. When taking off the shift cable does it have to be in forward, reverse or nautral?

Thanks Mike

No, but you do have to remove the cable ends where the hook up in the back of the drive.

Re: Removing SX-M???

your right theres no luck only skill. Well it all came apart no problems at all!!! Don there is one thing I cant find any Part# or diagrams for. There is 2 flatish thin o-rings on the shaft close to the front not the spine end these is the parts I cant find? It looks like these o-rings seats in the inner part of the bearing. One more thing the oil drain plug is really rusted all most rusting away do I try to take it off and replace it or leave it.

Thanks
Mike

Re: Removing SX-M???

I just got back from putting the boat in the water. Well not good. The reason why I pulled the drive in the first place was there was water leaking in from that little hole on the transom plate from below. Its doing the same thing but not as much is leaking now it slowed down. I replace the input shaft o-rings,bellow boot sealed everything really good. THe one thing i wasn't sure of was the boot seal on the pivot plate where it just goes around that lip with no hose clamp should i had used a sealent on that? PLEASE HELP DON!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to start taking it back apart now. THe first time I took that shaft boot off water did come out of there just to let u know.

Could it be the steering arm? I was just told that run though the boot also. I could be wrong. (probably)

Your last post caught my eye. Not really an answer to your question but the last thing you did...did you pull the drive to see if there was water in the bellows. You make it sound like you only disconnected the bellows.

ok first i saw the water leaking in the blige down at the bottom of the backing plate hole. So i bought it to my shop and losened the boot up and water came out like a cup or so. I pulled the drive off new bellows, seals cleaned everything off put sealer on everything and put it back together. put it in the water same thing leaks.

Can you post a picture of this hole?

OK, gotta ask. Did you disconnect the bellows from the transom shield to check for water? If you did, I'm not sure how you will get it back on properly. But, was it dry inside?
Easier way is to remove the drive.

I removed the drive after i took off the bellows and I saw the water. Heres the pic of the backing plate hole where I saw the water dripping out of when I lauched the boat and waiting there at the dock.

Re: Removing SX-M???

The hole in that Stainless steel backing plate has NOTHING attached to it. It just allows drainage laying on the transom cutout. You could have a lot of possible casuses for the leak. ANY Thing above that hole can run down and leak out that hole. Could be the exhaust Y, steering, who knows.
Time to get it out of the water, blow all the water out of everything and let it dry. Then coat it with some spray talcum powder. Put it back in the water and look for where the water is coming in.
If that doesn't work, I just pull the engine, put the drive back on. Block off the exhaust Y and put it back in the water. Then just sit down where the engine was and look for the leak.

From that picture only, my guess, (and it's only a guess because I can't see or feel [tap] the transom) is the the wood in the transom is either rotted, or not flat and the seal is leaking.
How old is this boat?
