Quick question for you guys. Does the lower unit have to be dropped in order to remove the prop shaft to inspect the clutchdog, spring, and forward gear?
Technically, no, you do not need to remove the unit to pull the propshaft and reverse gear. Removing the forward gear will require pulling the unit, as the driveshaft and pinion gear would need to be removed first.
Personally, unless you have reason to suspect the shaft, gears or clutch, I'd leave it be. If it ain't broke, don't fix it...
