i hope im posting in the right section...

my buddy and i recently bought an 89 vip vindicator 1900 in rough condition. it has an omc cobra stern drive coupled to a ford 5.0. both of us are new to boating also.

i saw it running before we bought it and it was running good, seller told us we needed to replace a bearing around the u joint or something like that, it was making a loud knocking sound while running. we intended to do a thorough inspection and rebuild on it anyway.

so we towed it home and fired it up. started easily but after 15sec of running it stalled and would not crank over any more. so we decided to remove the lower unit of the out drive and try firing the motor again to make sure there is nothing wrong there.

the problem is we cant get the lower unit off. we removed the trim hydraulics and the 6 nuts the hold it in place. it slides off about 1/2" and stops. we tried wiggling it and even prying it  but it will not budge any more.

we are thinking that the shaft might have seized, since there was no oil in the gear box on top. or possibly the u joint broke and is jammed up somewhere.

bottom line, how the heck do we get this thing apart? we have the seloc manual but its not being very helpful.

Did you shift to FWD? If it works like a Merc, in neutral, the shifter will hold it captive. There's also a small hose for the speedo.
