Removing Lower Cowl

Well I have my repair manual coming, but I thought I'd get a jump and try to drop the lower cowl so I could get at the exhaust plate bolts to try to fix my leak there. Is it a huge job?

I'm assuming that you're working on your 1997 40HP motor?

Not 100% sure about the 40HP motor, but usually you cannot remove the lower cowl without removing the power head. You can usually remove the bolts that hold the lower cowl in place and shift the lower cowl over to give you enough room to get to the exhaust plate bolts.

Okay thank you, yes I noticed the bolts are too long to make it out without moving something, plus I have 3 that aren't going to come easy.

A ratcheting box end wrench helps to speed things up in those tight areas.

SAE Ratcheting Combo Wrench Set - 7 Piece

The ones with solid steel bodies last longer than the ones that look like the body is made of two separate pieces of steel and riveted together.

Its not that there isn't room to undo them, they are just too long to come all the way out

Maybe remove carbs, slide up and off or up just enough?
