Removing Keel Guard adhesive

My keel guard started peeling back at the top and eventually pulled away so much that I removed it. I have a new one to install and looking at the left over adhesive and foam from the last guard, can someone advise me on the best way to remove it? It gunks up on razors and all the power sander does is heat it up and do the same. Is Acetone the best route?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to iboats.

Nitrile gloves, acetone or lacquer thinner and possible a stiff bristle brush. Make sure you are outside and well ventilated. Those chemicals are nasty to a person.

Thanks, appreciate the advice. The local boat repair shop wanted to charge me a day of labor and seems a little steep. I might get 1/2 way into it though and realize it's not so much after all.

I use toluene. May not be easy to find in your area. Lacquer thinner, as recommended by Bob, has toluene in it and would be my other choice. Again....be careful, either stuff has the ability to take you to a place you won't want to be. Be safe and good luck!
