Hey all, wasn't sure if I should post this in the non-repair section or not, so I obviously decided to post here. Here's my issue, 2 yrs ago I replaced my 87 Sea Ray Seville with a 02 Sea Ray BR185 with only 106 hrs on the 4.3L. The low hours & price was the only reason I eventually purchased it, but it has cost me a few k, since the boat was run in brackish/salt water most of her life, I run her in fresh. Anyway, the 2nd owner, who by the way only had her for about a year, decided to paint the entire out drive area while he put new bottom coat on the hull. Certainly not something I would have done, but I would like to remove the bottom paint from the out drive with out harming the original paint. I was toying with the idea of using paint thinner on a green pad & trying to remove it that way. I really don't want to sand it off and expose the aluminum, then have to prime & repaint. Just with time I've actually had her on the water, and not in the shop, there are some areas that are showing the original Mercruiser black. Any help would be appreciated, between working so much I don't have a lot of time to devote before I put her in the water. for the summer. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Most commonly used bottom paints are ablative; they are designed to dissipate in the water over time. You can try to expedite this process by using a garden shower and Scotch Brite pad and just have at it as if you are wet sanding. You can also try with a pressure washer at least at first to get all the weak paint out first before the Scotch Brite.

Alternatively, you can try this on a small, not so visible area.

Don't forget to wear gloves and PPE and also be sensitive to the fact that this paint is actually poisonous so don't allow it to seep into your neighbor?s yard, etc.

Thanks DeepBlue for the info. I was thinking of trying high pressure at a car wash as well, but it's a pain getting into one of those self serves unless they have an outside bay, not too many of them around my area. I'll check out the link for that remover. Thanks again......happy boating!
