I have a 22' Intercaostal bay/flats boat with plywood damage in the floor and transom. It has a molded top cap that comes down to the deck to form some storage compartments and the deck. It appears that this cap is somehow attached to the molded hull and can be removed. If I can remove it I could replace all the wood components and check the stringers at the same time. Anyone have any experience with this?

Take some pictures and post over on the restoration forum, I'm sure somebody there has first hand knowledge of what you are dealing with.

Removing cap/deck

Removing cap/deck

I have a 22' Inetrcoastal bay/flats boat with soft flooring and a failing transom. Before I go swimming I thought I would make the repairs. The top deck is a molded piece that overlaps the hull and comes down the gunwhales and across the deck. There are molded components that form storage compartments. This all appears to be one piece and should be removable. If I can "lift" this off, I could expose all the wood components on the floor and transom, and check into the stringers and floatation foam as well. Anyone had any experience with this kind of project? Thanks in advance.

Re: Removing cap/deck

My cap was similar, smaller boat, but cap and interior seat bases/consoles were built into cap, I removed it all in one peice, can check my thread and see if my experience helps you at all

typically the cap is attached to the hull around the edge under the rub rail. first remove the rub rail, then you will see the hundreds of screws or rivets holding the cap and hull together. once you remove the screws or drill off the heads of the rivets, the cap should separate from the hull. some manufacturers use caulk at this joint that will need to be broken.

This procedure is normally not for the faint of heart. You could get lucky and have the two pieces separate easily enough with a minimum of work BUT you could have something like mine where the top cap and hull have lots and lots of glassed in joints that would require a lot of cutting and even more restoration work. Some are easier than others but if you are going to move forward be prepared for what can be a major job. Good luck. And yes, the restoration area can be a great resource for questions and comments.
