Going to tackle a rebuild this winter. Its an 85 Bayliner with the volvo AQ125A and 270 outdrive.

My basic question is what angle to attack removing the motor..

I see what I would call a bell housing, and some large bolts. Take those out? Then am I looking at some sort of flywheel?! (Ive yanked my share of auto motors over the years)

or is is better, as I expect, to remove the motor another way, as at the plate where it passes thru the transom? (Ive had the drive unit apart to do the PDS bearing and ujoints before, and was staring at that plate I think.)

Im sure its a tired topic, maybe someone could point me to an old thread anyhow?

Thanks in advance,

Ron

Remove the six bolts behind the outdrive, loosen the exhaust, remove any front mounts if you have them, loosen necessary hoses and wires, and pull the engine out ???

Yes-after you remove the top gearbox first, and replace with new the 2 large sealing doughnuts and any bad clamp ring bolts upon reassembly.

He has a Volvo 270 so that is not the procedure.

So what's the difference between the AQ270 and the AQ280 transom mount, as I assume that's what you're referring to

Sorry, thought you were referring to the 6 nuts on a newer SX drive.

So used to the guys that comment on the older Volvos that don't even know these drives even exist. Love it when they say to change the gimbal bearing on these.

Thanks guys!

There are no front mounts, so that sounds pretty simple! I am going to tear it down pretty far while the engine is in place to make it lighter to deal with.
