Removing a Volve Penta 280 outdrive the easy way lol

Ok here is my situation my friend is "losing" his boat it's a 1978 Sea Ray and I bought the engine and complete outdrive from him, well this morning I completely removed everything around the engine and got everything stripped down to a long block and removed the bell housing bolts etc, the steering cable is disconnected as is the bracket that bolts to the outdrive from inside (steering bracket) , I also removed the electro mechanical tilt unit as a whole and removed the engine mount nuts.
Basically I paid $200 for a low hour 383 Chevy rebuilt 4 years ago and a VP 280 outdrive with 400 hours on it.

I'm hoping I could just remove the 6 outdrive nuts going thru the transom and remove the whole outdrive as a whole, is that possible? the only other outdrive I messed with before was a old 800 stringer omc and I just about shot that thing haha.
I would really appreciate a heads up as to how to remove the outdrive, I'm a pretty good mechanic but my outdrive experience is limited.
Also, since I removed my bell housing bolts and engine mount nuts shouldn't the engine just pull away and up from the outdrive???? Is my thinking correct there?
Any and all help is appreciated I'd love to have the outdrive pulled today if possible
Doc?:)

I would pull the pivot pins, and remove the outdrive from the transom shield.

Then I would remove the six bolts holding the clamping ring to the flywheel cover( where the ujoints connect to the engine). Now you can pull the motor with the flywheel cover installed. Sounds like you've already got the bellhousing unbolted now however, so yes you should be able to slide the motor forward and remove it.

Now pull the flywheel cover, exhaust, transom shield, etc.

Sounds like a big job.:)

Post some picks of you stroker and outdrive.;) We like pics.

This link shows how to remove your upper gear box, however if you leave the upper on, don't remove the nuts and bolts, and remove the pivot pins on each side, and the shift cable and exhaust bellows need to be disconnected, you can now remove the outdrive. Easy job as long as the pins aren't corroded in place. I hope its a fresh water boat...

:) I was just about to crash out...Uh when you speak of the pivot pins are those the 2 pins that are held in with those 2 allen bolts? I have to remove those and push them(the pins) in towards the bellow? if I do that then the whole outdrive will just pull out?
Did I read what you wrote correctly lol? I'm asking because I'm really tired and I just want to be sure of what your saying

O yes I already removed the exhaust manifolds and the Y pipe is the only thing there inside of the engine compartment I removed everything except the actual long block of the engine

Yes, remove the allen head locking bolts and drive the pins in toward the bellows. turn the steering helmet out of the way as you are driving the pins.

You also have to disconnect the other items in the link.;)

You'll need to remove the y pipe to remove the transom shield.

Ah ok sweet!! :) SO I have to disconnect the other items in that link you gave me, drive those pins out, and then proceed to just pull out the whole assembly?
--the transom shield--? the engine has to be pulled to get to that y pipe right?

Yep, make sure you are supporting the outdrive when the pins come out. It weights over 100 lbs.

Oh and I will take some pics today no problem , I mean the engine is a lil dusty but my buddy put about $3200 into it before he parked it I figured for a couple hundred I can't go wrong expecially since I got the 280 too

Ahhhhhhh ok I see now gotcha :). Well I thought by just removing the 6 bolts on the transom shield the whole deal would fall out magically in my lap lol but I see that's not the case now , so I can just leave the y pipe in there till I yank the engine in a couple days right?
Ya I didn't know the outdrive was separate from the transom shield I kinda thought it was all one thing

There are also 6 bolts holding the flywheel cover in the transom shield, #41 in the link I gave you. You'll need to remove those to remove the flywheel cover, #72, from the transom shield before the y pipe. But yes, you can remove the engine with the flywheel cover, y pipe and transom shield still in the boat.

I would do it a bit different when it comes time for installation, but that is a ways off.

Let us know how it goes.:)

Hey CMello!!!:) removing the outdrive was actually pretty easy man thanks alot for the help I was stressing that I thought it was going to be horrible, here are a couple pics and ya the engine is dirty due to being parked under several trees and having cats , lots of cats around. It is a 383 though it'll be spiffed up once I get it out and on the engine stand...Do they rent taller engine pullers to hoist the engine out of boats???
