removing a broken flywheel

Went fishing last night and the engine just conked coming in to the dock. We have a "72" johnson anniversary edition, 25 hp. When hubby removed the engine cover the fly wheel was really sloppy. Removed the bracket over the flywheel and the nut and the flywheel came right off. The base of it didn't. Hubby has been trying to get that piece off all day. Bought a gear puller to do the job but it won't grab the under side of the remaining piece without slipping. I thought of cutting it off carfully with a dremel cutting wheel and a few chioce smacks. What say you? <br />I'm sorry I don't know all the technical lingo about the parts of a motor, just as hubby knows nothing of this computer. So I thought I'd give you guys a shot. Thanks for your time.

Geez, one more follow up. If we are successful in getting that remaining piece of the broken flywheel off, where might we locate a replacement for an engine that old?<br /> Thanks again.

Hi Fishing Missus,<br /> The Dremel Tool route might be the best way to go. I think the hub of the flywheel on your motor is aluminum, so when you see sparks coming from the cutting blade, you've gone too deep (aluminum usually doesn't make sparks when cutting - steel does easily). If you can, remove the magneto plate first to prevent metal shavings from getting all over everything. It's held on by four Phillips head screws set in a rectangular patter. If there's too much of the hub left to pull the mag plate off, then cover it as best you can.<br /> As for another flywheel, they're one of those parts that usually doesn't wear out, so you're likely to be able to find one fairly easily... Check eBay, too. I believe flywheels from similar vintage Johnsons/Evinrudes in the 18-25hp range will fit. I'm not sure if there's a difference between the low-tension magneto flywheels and the traditional magneto flywheels. Perhaps someone else can fill that part in...<br /><br />- Scott

When cutting the hub off just cut where the flywheel key is. When your almost through the heat from the grinder and the pressure should make it break loose.

Hi fishingwife<br /><br />Nice to see you assist Hubby. Any flywheel from 18 - 25 Hp from 72 - 75 will fit. Most outboard scrap yards will have one. Good luck
