Hi,

I've got a 48 HP J48ESLETE. The bolt that holds the shift rod on the shift shaft twisted off. The parts list shows the endpiece that the bolt goes into should come off. Does the forward facing bolt have to come all the way out to take it off? If it does, then I will have to take the bottom carb off to get that front bolt in again, so I wanted to check first.

Thanks.

Is it item # 14 and #4 that you are referring to?

HighTrim,

It would be the shift lever and cup screw #2 & 14.

The shaft asy has a hole in it like maybe the bolt has to come all the way out.

You may be able to leave a couple threads in, but either way, you will need an extension with a swivel bracket to get to it with ease, or remove the starter, but many have had luck with the short extension and swivel bracket.
