i have a problem w/ my remote control that i need help on:
i have a 1986 25 hp on a jon boat that i recently bought and am fixing up - when i shift forward it slows dn and shift back it speeds up. it won't start unless straight up in what should be neutral but she actually starts in gear. Are my cables somehow reversed?

Easy enough to check. Have someone work the control while you look at the motor. The shift cable should work before the throttle cable kicks in. If you disconnect the cables and everything works properly, I'd suspect the remote control box.

thanks for the response! as i work the control back and forth, the first thing that moves is a black mechanism which pivots slightly forward when i shift it forward and then back when i shift back. when i shift further foraward or back the other cable shifts another mechanism.
(sorry for the poor terminology) is a black mechanism the shifter?

It sounds like its working properly. When the second cable kicks in it should be moving the distributor.I doubt your motor would act the way you say if it was in the motor. Has any work been done on the motor lately?

no work done to motor since i bought the boat. I suspect that cables are somehow reversed at the remote control. I appreciate the help and i should have more time to work on it tommorow eve. i'll be back in touch.

I guess my questions would be, how long have you owned the boat, and what makes you think thats the problem?
