Hi all,
I have a line on a 2001 90hp 4 stroke. I'd need to get the remote and cables etc. I searched a bit for what I need but I'd like to ask for help here too. I see that there are many aftermarket offerings, from Quicksilver, etc. This seems like something I'd want OEM, but maybe the aftermarket is ok too?

Nextly, is this a decent motor? I know it's sort of the beginning of the four stroke era, it's a carbureted model, I will of course do my baseline due diligence, compression test, etc to make sure it's in good shape before I think about buying it, just wondering if it's a good engine to begin with to think about making the swap happen. Going from a 1984 Johnson 90hp. Thank you.

A tag on question: iboats engine info lists this engine as having power steering. Coming for my '84 I'm not quite sure what that means. Does it mean that there is a hydraulic ram integrated into the steering control on the body, or something else? I'd like to upgrade to hydraulic steering anyway, just trying to figure out what the difference is on a motor that has it integrated.

Can anyone help answer my questions? I found some info on this thing, CW has some good info. Seems like a few folks have had some serious clogging issues of the small orifice jets, and others report no problems, though using a fuel conditioner/stabilizer/cleaner seems necessary.

Am I right that I need a control with an 8 pin harness?

I don't know yet because I'm going to look at/get it tomorrow. I'm trying to have a remote here by Friday if possible, so need time to order. I figured there was a standard number of pins for that motor? But I can't find any reliable info to that end, and I was thinking someone here might know.

At this point I'm just gonna check the thing out and go from there. I'll post results here in case anyone else is ever wondering this. Thanks for your replies!

In conclusion, it is an 8-pin. Got it here last night. Ordered all the general service stuff to get her in tip top, carb kits, impeller, oils, etc. Time will tell and we shall see!

Pics for fun. Clean in the inside, outside meh, but I'm not in it for the looks.
