Relocating oil filter on a Mercruiser 5.7?

Any risk in using an automotive application relocator as opposed to a marine one?

Reason I ask is there is a considerable price difference.

Thanks in advance!

make sure to use the correct oil bypass in the block. blocks come standard with an 11psi bypass, to run a remote oil filter, you need to swap to a 30psi bypass.

I did exactly that on my 4.3. Used off the shelf hydraulic hoses in a standard length to make things really easy and cheap. The 4.3l needs an oddball filter adapter for the block and that was the most expensive part of the whole process for me. There's thousands of options for a small block and the bypass is much easier to change too. The hoses fittings and adapters with the remote filter boss were ~$75. The block side for a 350 maybe another $30...

Picture for reference... I made a bracket and mounted mine lower as my rod holders wouldn't clear if it was on the elbow like most are. Good luck.

On my big block, I have a Canton block adapter, custom lines from the local hose shop and I think either a Hayden or a Transdapt (same casting) double filter head

Note it's best to do this but Merc never did, not even in the Merc manuals. The motor comes with two 11 psi valves and there must be more then a 11 psi differential for it to bypass

Merc does a lot of things that shouldnt be done, including using the customer as the testing phase of new products when they are first launched

in a prior life where I was measuring the differential pressures on natural gas converted SBCs used as generators, the oil differential on the remote filter on a cool morning was well over 11 psi. I remember seeing 15psi in the 40 degree range and well over 30 psi in the 0 degree range and that was with a fleetguard filter that also had a bypass in it.

since then, I have always recommended swapping the bypass valves when doing a remote filter housing to get the most filtration.

truth is the oil bypass is at a percent open nearly all the time because dirty oil is better than no oil flow

Some will recall I bought a remote filter kit from Michigan Motorz, same as they sell on their turn key motors, with a Canton Racing mount for the adapter, and I asked them about the 30 psi bypass. They said they don't do it, and have sold many engines with the standard bypass, but I felt that I wouldn't be comfortable not doing it the best way and decided to keep changing the filter as I always have, yank out half of the rear seat to get at it.
I called Canton Racing and asked them, and they said yes you should change it. It would always be in the back of my mind, is the oil really being adequately filtered, or not.
My logic was that I still have to pull the rear seats to get at the engine drain plugs when I winterize it anyway. So my plan now is run this engine till it needs repair, and at that point, if I stick with the V6 I will get a reman and add a half closed cooling kit and the remote set up with the correct bypass. That will eliminate the nuisance of pulling out the seats for normal yearly maintenance and will only need to do that for more involved repairs.
Used boats are so expensive and new is out of sight, except for the smallest models which are not big enough for the bays here on windy days, or the Sound on any day.....
BTW I quit using those short Sierra and Merc oil filters and switched to the long WIX filter, Purolator and AC also make long filters for the 4.3 with the block mount filter.

So I ran into this issue when I put my auto block in. The auto block had a block bypass on the filter mount, marine iirc did not. I ended up installing this remote kit and deleting the block bypass. Figured the kit was using a different filter with a built in bypass. @Scott Danforth , I assume you're saying a higher psi bypass is to account for the extra pressure drop of the lines on the remote setup?

Not to stray too far off topic... but thinking about it, I probably should've changed the pressure bypass in my road car when I added the oil cooler to the 350... Which actually would explain a lot.... Another winter project.

I didn’t even try to change it with the engine in place because I didn’t want to bugger up the removal of the old one. There’s just no easy way to get at it; Id have to use an inspection mirror just to see it. So as long as I still have to pull the seats to winterize its not a big deal to get down there & change the filter…
