regulator problem

I have a 2001 200xl mercury outboard and the voltage indicator is hitting the upper limit (18 volts?). I have been told that I need a new regulator. My question is do you have to pull the flywheel off the motor to get to the regulator or is it someplace easy to find? Thanks.

not under the flywheel trace the wiring coming from under the flywheel there it will be

You might test the VR before you replace it. Are you sure the voltage is 18 VDC? Does the battery hold a charge? Does the battery have sufficiant water? Make sure all connections are clean and tight.

A weak battery will cause the VR to charge more.
