Regulator problem, too much voltage

Hello,

I have a '97 Envrude 90hp, which is a non-regulated engine. I have my fish finder connected directly to the battery, but I am apparently still getting too much juice at high rpms, and my fishfinder keeps blowing. Other than connecting my fishfinder to its own battery, any idea how to fix this?

Thanks much.

How old is your battery? A weak old battery will give you similar voltage regulation problems. Make sure all connections are tight and the water cells are filled in the battery. A new battery may fix this problem.

Re: Regulator problem, too much voltage

Before jumping to conclusions -- 1) What 1997 Evinrude model do you have that does not have a voltage regulator?? Post the model number. 2) Most fish finders have a menu that allows you to display the battery voltage. Find that menu (if you have one) and display it. Then post the actual battery voltage at idle and WOT. 3) What do you mean by "blowing my fish finder"? do you mean the fuse blows or it just turns itself off? 4) If the fish finder doesn't have a battery voltage menu, use a hand held voltmeter (about $10 at Lowes, Home Depot, etc) to measure the voltage as indicated above. Post those numbers before buying batteries. I think your engine is regulated but the regulator may be toast.
