So I went to DE DMV today to run my trailer through and they could not find any vin on the trailer. Looks like there was possible a small sticker at some point but not sure if that's what it was. Said I need to go through State Police. Anyone have any experience with this?

My suggestion would be if you have any paperwork such as title or previous registration with the VIN number on it, go buy or borrow a set of metal stamps from someone. Stamp the number on the tongue where it's easy to find, go back to the DMV and register the trailer.

If you have no paperwork from the previous owner then that's a different ball game.

*Usually* the VIN is stamped somewhere on the trailer frame as a safety net for when the specification sticker become illegible.

So, take a look around and underneath the frame, etc.

Who made the trailer?
Or, what boat year/model is the trailer for?

Someone here with the same boat may be able to tell us who made the trailer,
and someone else who knows that brand trailer well, may be able to tell us where to look for the number.

The more information you can supply, the more everyone has to work with. :D

Do you know the manufacturer? If so you can try contacting them and ask for some info on it, such as where it might be stamped.

Re: Registering Trailer

I know in NY it's difficult to register anything. If everything is no spot on perfect they treat you like you stole it. Everybody at the DMV tells you something different. I did do a trailer once with no sticker or plate on it. You have to take it to the state police barracks and they give you a form to verify that it has no numbers on it. You are allowed to do this with no plates. You also have to own the boat for over a year before you can do this. Then you have to have the trailer weighed at like a gravel pit or scrapyard. You take this info to DMV and they assign you a number to put on the boat. It's alot easier to register it in Maine. You don't have to be a resident, you can register it for as many years as you like and you don't have to get it inspected if it's under like 3k lbs. All you need is a prior registration and a bill of sale.

When I bought my brand-new trailer, the dealer handed me the Serial Sticker, and said "stick it on anywhere".

Can you make up a VIN or register it as home made? Works here in MN.

Not all trailers are stamped with a VIN#. Got a trailer now that had a sticker that was conveniently located where all the rocks hit when trailering it, so the VIN is unreadable! In Wyoming, you have to get a state-issued VIN# assigned to it & then you have to have it stamped in the trailer. Something you may want to check into where you are at.

Re: Registering Trailer

My 2002 Venture trailer has no VIN on it that I can find, but luckily it appears on the title/registration. I needed it for inspection. Going to stamp it on somewhere on the main frame myself. What a pain they don't put plates on them like they do cars, if it's so important to the authorities.

Re: Registering Trailer

Don't know if you have the same thing where you live, but in GA you register the trailer as "home made". Take it to the County Sheriff's office to have it inspected (basically for lights and to verify that it doesn't have a previous VIN number), and they assign it a new Homemade Trailer VIN plate which you then permanently affix to the trailer (rivets or non-removable bolts). After the Sheriff's office assigns it the new VIN, you take it back to DMV to register the trailer.

I've had to do it to every trailer I've owned here in GA. Half-day process.
