Be sure the stringers are good. Usually when the deck (boats dont have floors) the stringers are not far behind. Be aware that not all foam are the same. The density determine if it can be use for just flotation or structural. The iboats is an option for floating application, check this site too for more options. http://www.uscomposites.com/foam.html

wow, quick replies, thanks a lot guys, i appreciate your help. another question now, how do i know how much to buy and what density? its a 15 foot glastron (as stated before), i have already put new stringers in and there doesnt seem to be that much space under the deck to fill with foam. will 8 cu ft be enough you think at 2lb density? this boat was really just a summer project and i dont really plan on spending a whole lot of money fixin it up so its lake worthy. i dont plan on doin any hard riding (like water skiing or anything) mostly just for fishin and putting around the lake. would it be best for me to lay the floor and then put the expandable foam in there or should i put the foam in first, shave it down as needed and then lay the floor?

I can't answer what density but you should be able to do the rough math to find out the cubic feet. You may want to ask over in the restroration forum if you don't get an aswer here.

Check out this link from one of the Sticky Posts:

Based on what I know and what my understanding is: The urethane foam from iboats or US composites is what you need. Just for flotation 2lb is all you need. If it's going to be supporting your floor you'll need a higher density.

As for the quatintiy: There are calculations in the link above that answer most of your questions. Some folks on here say to deck then shoot the foam into the hull. Others have used it like you said: Filling then cutting down then laying the deck. I guess it's a matter of personal preference.

Follow the link and pay attention to the level flotation section. It made me aware of some things I'd never thought of. Having 2 small children in my boat next summer has me rethinking my scheme now that I've read through this manual.

That link isn't working as it comes up exactly as it is seen in the post, I'd like to see that pdf file though.

Go to the Boat Restoration Forum and click on the very top post "Coast Guard Rules" or Some Such. That's where I found it!

You dont have to put flotation in your boat. If you were a boat manufacturer you have to by law. I did not bother adding any for my Babcock. Im going to shave some off my Cobia to make for larger compartment.

im only using 1/2" plywood for the floor though, so im gonna put foam under it to help support. i just ordered some 2lb density (8 cu ft) of it today, hope to get it before i move on july 19th so i can get this boat back together. i appreciate all the help and advice guys. and for all you people buying a boat that needs a floor, be prepared for a good project, its a fun one though, i had a blast all summer working on it and learning about it. now to get the engine running......:p
