reel lube

lousy weather for fishin so i thought i would try my hand at troubleshooting a couple of old penn reels i used for teasers. found a schematic for the reels but i dont have reel grease. is there a automotive grease i could use [trailer bearing grease]? got the parts soaking in limeaway right now.

I would think that such types of grease may not provide the best efficency benefits to your fishing reels, there are inexpensive specialised lubrication products on the market that will serve you much better.

I've always used Penn Reel Lube on my Penn Long Beach reels.

I have a part time business rebuilding rods and reels. This is the best reel lube and oil that i have found. Good luck!

TS is good stuff, I have also used Quantum's Hot Sauce.

By the way, if you haven't opened up a Penn conventional reel and had the dog spring shoot across the room, you haven't really opened one up yet. And if you have a hard time figuring out where it goes back, then you haven't been to Mikes site to get a reel schematic. Enjoy!!

I rebuild all 18 of my Penn conventionals every year. Never had a dog spring fly yet. Must be doing something wrong

I use Super Lube on the reels. 3in1 Blue oil on the bearing to my trolling reels and a mixture of Tournament and Red Rocket Fuel on my casting reels

BTW: Your grease looks like Cal's Drag grease

Dingbat...hopefully you only lose the dog spring once! Looks like you have some experience!

OK...I'll bite. What the he!! is red rocket fuel???

Also the grease with teflon and corrosion resistance just takes a dab. 2oz will last a year and do over a hundred reels.

I'm one of those crazy surf casters that spends money on ceramic bearing and high performance oils then spends even more making it usable to fish.

Here is a link to the Rocket fuel website. good stuff. I mix tournament and Red together to get a viscosity I like to use when fishing

So, the TSMoly grease is about $32 an ounce. How much is CAl's??

And my shop wall has blowups of Alan's work. Just didn't find the link in time to post it earlier. I am still working on getting a 'puter run outside in the shop. The wireless connection won't make it thru the metal building so gotta run a cat5.

Lubriplate white lithium grease works well but for a very small investment you can get Pennlube and reel oil from any place that sells Penn products or from online sources. The Lubriplate comes in pint cans where the Pennlube is in a squeeze tube easily kept in a tackle box. I keep a tube of Pennlube (or generic reel grease) and a small container of reel oil together with a couple of spare pawls in my tackle box.
