Red plug wires

I have an '83 evinrude 50hp that someone has cut the red plug from the engine off of. I got a used one from a marine salvage yard but it has two black with yellow striped wires and from the engine I only have one. Do I add wire to one of them and make sure that both are grounded or do I just use one of them.
I also have a brown wire coming from the engine and the new plug harness has a very faded white wire that could have at one time been brown. Is this for an alarm and does it need to be hooked up to keep it from going off if it isn't?

If I remember right it is:

Red w/ purple 20 amp fuse
Purple w/ white primer solenoid
purple battery voltage in run on ign
Black battery negative
black w/ yellow kill switch
Yellow w/ red starter
gray tach
brown alarm?

The black w/ yellow goes into a plug that I cannot find on ishopmarine. Is this the starter switch that brp evinrude shows?
Thanks

Re: Red plug wires

I know that on my motor, the wiring to temp sensors is tan. Is it possible the wiring you replaced came from a V6 motor that had two power packs? That would explain two black/yellow wires.

I was looking at schematic for '83 50hp, the electric start is at the engine according to it. I'm just taking a stab, being a YAHOO and all, but it looks like the black/yellow wire on that diagram goes to a 3 prong plug that connects wiring to coils and kill switch.

Make any sort of sense?

EDIT: Never mind, I found another diagram for yours. But keep in mind the pair of black/yellows could be because of (2) power packs.

Re: Red plug wires

The black/yellow stripe wires are the kill wires. The wires in the plug go to the same pin so you can cut one off and use the other. The plug you got most likely came from a V4 with two power packs. (you got it Mikey..... :) )

I would believe a tan wire in the harness but not brown. The only brown wire is up on the engine and is usually a sensor lead. If it goes back to the heat sensor like Mike suggest, then that's it....an ohm meter can help ringing out the wires.

Re: Red plug wires

I would tend to agree with mikeyzx2. I would just use one of the black/yellow's.
I have a solid brown but it is a charge coil wire

This is my 1978 evinrude 175 wiring from motor:
black/yellow...kill
purple/red... power
ground....
purple... accessory and routes from switch to horn alarm also
tan..temp sensor switch
purple/white...choke
yellow/red...start

on my motor the purple goes to terminal block and dead ends...this could possibly be your brown

Re: Red plug wires

Mikey, OBJ, and dc you are all correct in that the wire is tan. It does go into the back of the block so I will assume that it is the temp sensor. I thought about the harness coming off of an engine with two powerpacks but I wanted to hear from you guys. The black w/ yellow goes into plug with the two orange wires from each coil. The black/yellow is shot just before it enters that plug so I need to know what it is called so I can get one from my dealer. Getting closer on this engine since we finally had two days above 60 degrees so I could work on it a little. Also does that tan wire need to be hooked up to the very faded white possibly at some time tan wire from the new plug? I don't want an overheat alarm going off all the time because it is not hooked up.
Thanks for the responses.

Re: Red plug wires

what yer describing fireman is what I was yabbing about earlier. The plug connects to coil wires and kill switch, for the non-remote 50 horse. the other diagram I saw was for one with remote controls. Do you have controls or tiller? I ask cuz if you have controls, the black/yellow will route to the main plug, onward to the kill switch, whereas if it's tiller, the wiring runs to killer mounted on the motor.

Hope I didn't sling too much cat **** :)

Controls. Sorry Mikey, I guess my bifocals missed the part about the three pronged plug because that is it. Thanks again.

Re: Red plug wires

'tis okay fireman, having controls makes my head scratching a little easier cuz I don't have to flip flop between diagrams. they both have the same plug, the kill wire traces a little differently. I think the big issue is that the harness you picked up is a little different, but I'm sure it ought to work provided OMC was consistent in their wire codes. you could probably just cap off the extra blk/ylw wire.

turn on the key and take the "white looking wire" and touch it to the block. should get the buzzer. could the wire possibly be the grey tach wire also? plus, that harness should have two tan wires, one for each head on V4 or V6. you're on the right path I think, holler back if I'm getting you confused.

Re: Red plug wires

Good to hear from you. The harness has no tan wires on it. I already capped off the extra black/yellow. Have everything crimped except tan and the white from the harness. It is definitely white. Undid all the tape and it was white all the way down. I also just put the fuse in line as the wiring harness runs down the opposite side of the starter solenoid. Temperature is dropping pretty good again so I haven't tried to turn it over yet to check compression.

Re: Red plug wires

AAARRRGGGHHH! I was going to unhook the red cannon plug from my 25hp to plug into the 50hp that I just rewired but on my 25 the fuse and hookups arein front of the plug and on the 50 they are behind the plug. Can I just splice another plug in front of the one on my 25 to use for the 50?
