Red banner for 90 Day+ old Threads . . .

Just noticed that when you view a thread that is over 90 days old, a red banner displays a warning not to post to old threads.

Yes. We are trying not to close any threads, and as you know we try and minimize tacking on to old threads here. It is especially confusing with technical threads. Hopefully this addition will help!

I saw the banner in the past few days and meant to comment but got side tracked. Good one, guys. Hope it helps to keep the old ones where they belong.

Yep, older threads are great in the archives for information, or to be opened by the OP only. Hopefully the banner will help.

Looks like the banner still does not get people's attention. Certainly looks like a newcomer issue, so I take it that they are not really reading through the forum rules. I know that I have posted to a couple of old threads accidentally, but I wonder what percent of newcomers are replying to old threads right out of the gate. It seems high . . .

However first impression makes it sound as if Nobody should reply to the thread .. not even the OP.

Also .. when you do open up a reply box the red banner is covered up. It might just be my browser settings ?

Mine was doing the same thing. Although, the red bar was being covered up with a tool bar after scrolling down a thread aways. I closed the tool bar and it quit. I even logged out and back in and it still worked fine......... Odd.......

Tony, be aware that the Social Media bar covers up the red banner as you browse down the thread. Can you set it up so the Red Bar is at the bottom, closer to the reply button, than the top? Just asking ...

On the current banner, I've noticed that once an old thread is replied to, the banner isn't appearing, Once the thread is "Lazarused" it reverts to live status. Is there a way to display the red banner unless the OP replies?

I almost hesitate to suggest this one - But if "Reply to Thread" is clicked or if a user begins to type in the "Quick Reply" box, could that generate a warning pop-up (oops, I said the nasty word) with rule 12 quoted if the thread is inactive? VB might not support something of that nature.

I could very well do this, let me discuss it with the other guys and see what they think.

Also, I moved the bar to the bottom due to it being hidden by the social bar.

Is this banner going to show up in the restoration threads as well as some of us it might take 90 days to back to working on our boats again and post something..

Not speaking for the Mods and admin, but there are no restrictions on the original poster updating his/her thread. They know restos have peaks and valleys. And some go on for years so that's understandable. The red banner is meant more for non-OPs replying to inactive threads.

Yeah, OP's are definitely exempt from the 90 day rule. As soon as you post and update the 90 day clock starts again. Once you get out of the thread, and back in, the banner will be gone for all.

That's kinda what I thought from what I read above and good idea as I've even almost replied to threads not knowing or not paying attention to the thread was a real old one, and some threads kinda makes me wonder what ever happened to the OP and the results ...

I just noticed this ^^^, I think that's a great spot for it Tony. It shows up pretty much where an iboater will be writing up a new post. I do believe this will help on the bringing up old posts deal:thumb:

I agree, the bottom does make more sense. I made the font size larger as well, now lets see if it works.
