just got a new rectifier from dlg marine for my 1981 evinrude 115 hp today i just tested it as i have read on this and other forums with my ohmmeter and not getting any readings at all, completely open every way tested. i know the old one was fried(literally) cause the black packing melted and dripped down the side of the engine.does this have to be hooked up and run first to test it? it woulld be my luck to get a brand new one thats defective, whats new! anybody got any ideas please feel free to let me know.

Re: rectifier

I have never tried it, but I was told that digital ohmmeters will not check diodes properly. Since I have only owned analog meters, it was never an issue.

You are trying to ohm across the diodes, on a resistance X1 setting.

your right i'm using a digital multimeter, it makes sense to me. gonna install it later tonight and check if my voltage comes up when running at the battery. one thing though on my old original rectifier one of yellow wires had a white stripe and on this new one both the yellow wires are solid, any thoughts? does it make any difference where they go? i mean since it doesn't have the white stripe how can you tell?

Re: rectifier

Don't be concerned. Makes no difference which yellow goes where as long as they go to the inputs.

Re: rectifier

just got done putting the rectifier in and at idle its putting out 13.3v and when you bump it up it goes up over 14v. let me tell you when i took off the old one i was shocked at what i saw, it looked like this thing could have started a fire. my opinion is that these things should be removed and the backs inspected on them, after what i saw i know i will as regular maintenace.
