Rectifier????

Soooo on a 1988 25hp mercury outboard what does a rectifier do ? As per my earlier post when I hit the key all I get is a click. So far I have replaced the battery and the battery cables (they were totally trashed). I tried jumping the solenoid (with the key turned on) and still nothing. I'm thinking that I need to replace the solenoid but not sure.??????

Still a poor connection, but you have narrowed it down to the solenoid (and the connections on it)

OR

the starter, the brushes worn, dirty commutator.

Grab your trusty set of battery jumper cables, jump straight from the battery positive to the starter.

If it cranks fine, then replace the solenoid, if not R&R the starter.
