I seem to be needing a new rectifier/regulator for my engine.
what i want to knwo is is there any benefit from buying a genuine omc unit, or would i be better off buying from the likes of CDI electronics etc .
What are the differences in both price and quality of the units.
Is an after market unit as good as the original or is it better ?

My engine is 1996 evinrude 60hp triple.
Model no BE60TLEOC.
The rectifier/regulator has 5 wires
2 xyellow (1 with grey stripe)
1x purple
1x red
1x grey.

can these units be repaired ?
or is it simply complete replacement ?

If they fail the test they are scrap.

CDI units seem to be good, have never heard anything negative about them myself.

How did you test it?

Mine was just replaced by a mechanic using a CDI unit. It lasted about 5 hours running time before it stopped regulating the voltage. My voltage went from 14 volts to 16.9 volts. The mechanic (Supplied and Installed) the CDI rectifier/regulator. It had NO part number or any Identifing Markings on it. MY OLD ONE DID. He said there is NO warranty. I'm going to buy a Sierra unit and install it myself.

The OEM and CDI regulators need the purple wire, so I took the Mallory unit to replace the rectifier. Has worked fine for one season now.

CDI products have either a one year or two year warranty on them, depending on the item. Give them a call.

If you have wing nuts on the battery, that may be part of the problem. Use stainless-steel hex nuts and lockwashers like Johnson and Evinrude have preached for over 25 years.

I checked the Sierra Warranty. It says "LIfe Time" for original owner if installed by a certified mechanic.

Go with Sierra, that's hard to beat as far as the warranty.

Yup. Sierra is a subsidiary of Teleflex and they don't like bad vibes. So long's you got documentation they stand by their warranty.

I couldnt fully test the regulator/rectifier as limited multi meter.
but none of the tests passed at all.
the yellow wires when put to red both gave continuity both ways
the engine had no rev counter and no battery charging.

from what ive read this rectifier is a bad one.

ive now got what is supposed to be a good working one and hope to fit it tommorow if possible.

its an omc one, so hopefully is a good one, though the part numbers are a bit different i have been told it should be the same.
old one is omc 585001 newish one is omc 584476.

To werner f , what exactly do you mean by purple wire then went to mallory ?
is it the mallory dont use the purple wire ????? if it dont then how do you get the positive to the control box etc

My 1989 60hp engine was a rectifier-only design. The purple wire (+12V from key switch) is present in the control box (for buzzer and accessories) but ends in the big red connector and is not provided in the engine harness.
The Sierra 18-5827 and the Mallory 9-17202 regulators don't have the purple wire (they regulate on the red wire) and thus suit best when upgrading a rectifier-only engine with a regulator.

It's not the regulator that powers the purple lead but the key switch in the control box. The OEM/CDI regulators use the purple wire as sensing input. It tells the regulator whether to increase or decrease the voltage.
