I suspect you will get a different answer if you're runnin a 300 hp or a 5 hp. The trick is for you to give us a clue on what you got.

lol,,,true, I thought about that after i posted. it is a 1994 60 hp evinrude. I disconnected the gear shaft by removing a pin, pushing the rod toward the powewr head.

AFter you took it out did you move the throttle or push the shift shaft up or down??? I just finished replacing mine. It's not that hard. If you didn't touch anything and just replaced the pump.....push the unit back up and the shift shaft will come up threw the housing and come really close(eyelid) were the shift lever inserts to.Just present the shift shaft to the piece and see if it goes straight in. I had to giggle mine a little. Then just push the shift lever to the starboard (right) side until you see the hole for the retaining clip. Make sure all washers are behind the hole and insert retaining clip. Shift shaft is now secure. OH... please remember to fully secure the lower unit with the 4 main bolts before you mess with the shift shaft.

What appears to be happening is the shift rod is pushed down, into gear from the preasure of pushing it up through the engin.Any tricks to prevent that?
Also, does that eye need to be in any particular position??

I know it is something very simple to get the darn thing back together!
