I purchased an 19' aluminum deep-v boat that is pretty much stripped except for the steering. As I'm pretty new at this, I'm looking for books to read that will explain the does and don'ts of setting the boat up and basic seamanship. I've had small boats before but nothing where electronics were involved. I'm planning on going out on the bay to chase those big stripers I just can't seem to catch from shore.

Hi, Tedd. Welcome to the best boat site on the web.
You are approaching the boating world from just the right angle, and are to be commended.
Most folks new to it, just go out there, and learn "on the fly"....NOT a good idea! The water is the last place for the unprepared.
We are all familiar with the stats of injuries, sinkings, deaths related to lack of knowlage and safe boating practices.
Yor first step is to enroll in the nearest Safe Boating course. But in the interum, here is a great place to learn some of the basics online. http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/safetips.htm

As for the boat, it sounds like a great winter project's start! When you find a nice engine to power her, make sure the very next purchase is a shop manual covering the engine. I promise you, it will pay for itself way before you put the boat in the water the first time.

And check into the iboat's forum for any questions you may have. There are very few "experts" here. But there are boaters galore, and surely, one or two of them have crossed the bridge you are in question of, at any given time with your project.
Boating on a budget is somewhat of an oxymoron , but there are tricks and tips that save THOUSANDS sometimes. What I mean is, we all want to keep SOME greenage for bait-n-gas. So we come here to learn and share what we know. Welcome again to the fold.

12Footer, Thanks for the reply, I hope I'm smart enough to know when I'm ignorant. I'm pretty sure it will get expensive when I'm not. I did pick up a 1980 50 hp Johnson, so I'm sure I'll be asking questions in the Engines forum. Thanks again

td
