Recitifier and RPM questions

A couple questions and the first may be a dumb one. I suspect my rectifier is bad. My question is does my engine have a Rectifier Lead and a Rectifier/Regulator? I noticed on the the Parts schematics on the evinrude site that they both were listed, I went over my engine looking for it in case i missed it but the only things I have found are the power pack, tilt/trim relay box and a rectifier lead. Am I missing something here? Model number
E112TSLERS 1994 evinrude 112hp.

Also what should this engine run at WOT? I am pushing 6700 to 6800 RPM's when this thing is actually running strong and that seems a little high.

Re: Recitifier and RPM questions

The stock rectifier is either unregulated or it is a water cooled regulated rectifier. The tachometer would not work if you did not have one or the other.

The stock power pack on your motor did not have rev limit built in so it is certainly possible that you could reach that high, but you should be mixing your fuel/oil for high performance when you do. Are you sure that your tach is set on 6P?

The unregulated rectifier looks something like the one shown here:

The one is the pic you posted is the same as mine, except mine only has 3 wires. I am still trying to learn much of this information, the ignition problems are hard for me to grasp. I am not sure what you mean by 6p though? Thank you for your response to my question.

Re: Recitifier and RPM questions

The Bombardier parts list shows the rectifier/regulator is used on the extra longshaft units. The normal long shaft units use the rectifier only. From your model number, looks like yours is the plain "long" model, using the rectifer that ezeke has pictured. I think power packs in your vintage came with a factory preset 5850 rev limit, so it is unlikely that you are actually turning 6700. Either your rectfier is bad, causing the tach to read wrong, or the setting on the tach is incorrect.

Re: Recitifier and RPM questions

Thank you for the info, I am not sure how to set the tach though, how would I go about doing that once I fix the rectifier problem of course. I have manual but it doesn't even hit the 112hp for 1994, kind of skips from 110 to 115.

tach wiring 2.jpg

Tachs have rotary switches on the back that set it to different numbers of coils in the charging circuit, times two because there is a positive and negative pulse for each coil for each cycle. Tachs measure pulses. That being said, your tach should be set to 6 as stated on the rotary switch.

According to the parts manual the OEM power pack on your motor is part number 584028 which has no built-in rev limit. It corresponds to a CDI PN 113-4028, which also has no rev limit.

Thanks I will check that, it makes sense to because this boat originally came with a 70 hp johnson.
