rebuliding Question on a 150 crossflow

Hi guys, I have a question on weather or not to rebuild a 85 150 cross flow . Bought the motor cheap and want to upgrade my power on a 21 foot striper walk around .The engine on there now is a 115 looper, boat turns 5200 rpms at wot runs 30 mph. Have not looked at the bores but I am sure it needs a complete overhaul on the 150 cross flow . Is it worth the money and labor to invest in the 150 or a waste of time? I can handle tear down and assembly need to farm out the machine work. any thoughts ?thanks, jerry

Does it run? Have you checked the compression? Overhaul price depends a lot on what condition the engine is in before you start. Are you going to have to bore it out, pistons ok, just need to hone and install rings?

The V6 will definitely make more torque. You will be pleased with the increase in performance. Things to consider: the crossflow is not a fuel-efficient engine compared to the newer V6 looper engines. If you have to overbore the engine during the overhaul, that means new pistons. Pretty expensive. You may find that your $ can be better spent on upgrading to a newer engine. I've run crossflows for years and have had excellent luck with them. Replacement parts are still readily available.

The motor has compression but is low 70to 80 lbs in all but one cycliner , that one reads 50 lbs , just trying to way the options of putting 1700 bucks into this powerhead or look for a used motor that i dont know the history of what to do .

That power head is due for an complete overhaul with one cylinder at 50 lbs. Possible that one of the rings has disintegrated. If so the engine will be down on hp. Continuing to run it may do further damage to the cyl walls. How mechanically inclined are you?

Sorry for the late response no problem mechanically . Iam a mechanic in a refinery certified welder is my real craft. I guess iam trying to get as much feed back to see if it worth any dollar value to put back into this block? The fist thing would be to see if the crank and block are damaged an micometer all the parts ??? Is the old cross flows worth time and money or shop for a 60 degree looper will take any advise from the master rebuilders.

I rebuilt my '85 150 V6 last summer. 6 new pistons .030 over dim, bearings, gaskets, rings etc. It ran and I did not find nothing really wrong with it, but wanted to get down to "fresh" metal and 100% bores and piston match.

The engine feels like new. A completely different sound and feel to it when it runs, seems a lot calmer and not so stressed and rough..

But it did cost money, yes. But it has an value to me other than money, I know that if I treat it right it should last for many years to come..

Best to check the cylinder wall taper and determine just how round the walls are. That will give you an idea if you need to overbore (and need all new pistons and rings.) You can compare what is needed to overhaul yours vs. the purchase of a newer engine of similar hp.

That's a tough question, and probably has more to do with you than anybody else. I'm a big fan of my Crossflow. She does like the fuel, but man she can run and do so all day. It's probably 1/2 a dozen of one and 6 of another as it comes to buying another used motor, however, availability is the key. As much as I love mine, if I thought I needed to spend $1700.00 on her, I"d probably shop around for a later model one. But, I'm in outboard heaven down here too. Keep us informed, because if you do decide to rebuild her, that would make for a great thread!

I guess iam in a pretty good posistion with decent motor on the boat now .Iam afraid the motor may be undersized for my hull ,it is a 115 looper pushing a 21foot wa striper. This old cross flow i got for a few bucks butdont know the condition of the crank or bores yet. I guess pop the head and cross my fingers see how it looks inside. Does anyone know the difference in fuel consumption between the old cross flows and the newer loopers of the same horsepower say the 150 hp range is there much difference?? I will post up dates once the head is off.

From what I understand there's a lot of difference in fuel consumption. I know that my 140 Crossflow loves gas....a lot.....as in "addicted to it", lol. But she runs so good I hate to complain.
