JImmbo and everyone else here, I'm terribly sorry for my rude comment. It was way out of line and completely unnecessary.
The timing and the cam that opens and closes the carburetors is linked together. So, timing advance and carbs opening happen simultaneously, so I understand what ya'll are saying. However, on most larger motors, the initial steps for link and sink clearly separate the timing settings and the carb opening settings and they are done separately. Synchronizing the two things to happen at exactly the correct time is crucial. But they are two completely different things. I realize that on smaller outboards, the timing plate under the flywheel actually has the "ramp" that the roller rides on that opens and closes the carbs, right? But isn't there an adjustment for that roller so that you can set the idle timing and carb opening separately and then adjust that roller to make them synchronized correctly? Separate things that have to work perfectly together.
Again, I've very sorry for my attack. It was terribly rude and uncalled for.

there is no idle timing setting for the smaller motors, although OMC did try that only for a few years with the 6-8hp. 99% of them its just making sure the throttle plates open when inline with the mark on throttle cam, and the later ones you can adjust throttle cam @ WOT so throttle plates are horizontal. 1980-198or so didnt even have that! come to think of it, there is no WOT timing setting on any of them in this size.

The smallest outboards that I've ever done any real work on was a 25 HP Evinrude and an ancient 18 HP Evinrude. I guess I assumed that they were all similar to that. Recently, it's been mostly V-4's in OMC and Yamaha. That's a different animal I guess. I'm just trying to help here, but I'll try to limit my comments to things I'm more familiar with. I certainly don't want to provide anyone with incorrect information.
