I have a recently rebuilt 5.7 gxi Penta and replaced the distributor and coil with new MSD upgrades but now it feels like it has a restrictor plate at 3300 rpms and the take off is weak. Is there something else that needed to be changed or adjusted to take this upgrade?

first off ,explain how you set the timing , bad timing will do as you have described.

Being a GXi means it's injected.

Did you clean the injectors?

How did you set timing?

What MSD "upgrades"?

Injectors are new.
It was a seasoned, volvo penta mechanic who did the work for the whole motor.
Not sure how he set the timing.
In neutral I get all the RPM's I want but in drive is when it limits to 3300 rpm.

What MSD distributor part model/kit number did you install?
Hopefully a marine version compatible with your complex fuel injection connections.
Some have limiters that are added and some need adjustments.

  • The Marine Pro-Billet distributors have been tested by Underwriter’s Laboratory and are certified to meet or exceed safety standards for marine ignition systems as set by the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Only three wires to connect for a simple installation (Ready to Run Versions)
  • High output ignition module produces quick starts, smooth idle and improved mid range performance (Ready to Run Versions)
  • Accurate and maintenance-free magnetic pickup never needs adjustment
  • Easily adjust the mechanical advance with the supplied springs and stop bushings to fit your boat’s needs
  • All of our marine distributors are equipped with flame arrestor holes machined into their billet aluminum housings.

what MSD "upgrades"

also, in neutral, your motor only needs to run on 3 cylinders to get to redline. and it will do it without more than a drop of fuel.

under load in gear, you need all 8 cylinders and you need a lot of fuel.

What is the fuel pressure?

If they are, its a lot of money to spend vs simply using the Delco Voyager.
