rebuilding carburetors

I have a 89 evinrude 150hp. How hard is it to rebuild the carbs? I know it will cost me an arm and a leg at the local boat shop. Any idea of what it would cost me to do it.

about 20 to 25 a carb you need to order you a manuel for this I will try to find a link to where you can buy just the parts you need<br /> but it is not to hard to do<br /><br /> web page<br /><br /> web page this is a place to start

Hello<br /> if tyhe carbs have plastic fuel bowls chek them carefully for warpage. other than that its a simple task<br /> good luck and keep posting

be sure and replace the needle and seats plus the floats if possible

Buy the factory manual and use the factory carb kits for best results.

What is the difference between the factory carb kit and after market kits?

Quality is the difference between the OMC kits and say, something like sierra kits. A factory Manual will be specific to your motor and not show 10 different models that may confuse you when doing the rebuild. Not that hard to do. Just work in a good clean area (I use an old sheet) and if possible, take pics with a digital camera as you go from the beginning, in case you forget where something goes(Linkage, Ect). If you get stuck, we are always here to help. I did my carbs back in the summer. I used a can of spray carb cleaner for each carb and omc kits. My plastic float bowls leaked when I got it all back together. Big drag. I took them back apart and flattened the bowls using 120 grit paper on a thick glass plate. You might do this before you put them back together the first time.<br /><br />While you have the carb off, remove and clean the recirc valves. The book will explain how to do this with alcohol not carb cleaner. Follow the book for the carb overhaul and the sync and link when it is all back together.<br /><br />Good luck,<br />Duck L.

Sounds good but, how about the welch plug that I have heard of. How do you remove and replace, or is anyone removing and replacing and do the after market kits carry the welch plugs or they only offered with OEM kits?<br /><br />Thanks

I did not take my plugs out this time. I did it before on anouther engine though. It seems like I drilled a small hole in it and pulled it out with a pick. Don't drill through anything important though. That's the kicker. The new ones that come in the omc kits are dome shapped. Place them over the hole with dome side up. Tap top of dome with flat punch & hammer. This will flatten it out to grab the sides of the hole. As far as the welch plugs go, that method is the way I would do it. Also, when you put them back in, take some clear fingernail polish and coat the plug with it. That will help seal it up. You don't want it sucking air through there . <br /><br />James
