I am about to purchase a heavily used boat with a blown motor. It has 185 OMC I/O. The block is shot, so I will have to start from scratch. What are the differences in a marine engine vs. a landbearing engine. And can I get around some of these special parts by going with a closed circut cooling system. Help this is all new to me....

The blocks are the same. Closed circuit systems work on small engines, but require special setup. I can't help ya there. The
only I/O's I owned were V-8, and ran on 180-proof sea water. It was costly to maintain, but offered the ability of hooking-up an electric standby pump in the event of water pump failure (learned the hard way,and it failed 3 times on the same boat).
But then, my boat stayed in the water year-round.

------------------
I'm no expert, but I DID sleep at a Holiday Inn last night!

Re: Rebuilding Boat

Is this a boat that has a transom suitable for conversion to outboard? If so, consider it. It would be faster and more maneuverable, easier to service and should you need to repower that would also be easier.

Good luck.

Hi BB,
Put race bearings in the motor keep and use the Marine cam rockers,manifold,carb,fuelpump. Also a New Oil Pump. Use marine gasket kits. good luck.

------------------
...have fun...corm

cubic inches = power
power = speed
speed = FUN
