Hi, I'm in the process of rebuilding the carb on my 93 4.3LX with the Weber. After doing lots of searching here, it seems that I could use the Edelbrock #1477 carb kit and the 1485 calibration kit. However, I noticed that there are a couple of Mallory kits here on iBoats that, according to the picture, include the accelerator pump. The pics of the Edelbrock kit don't. I'd like to replace every wear item but I don't know which kit is for my carb.

Here they are:

I know these carbs are used on V-8's as well, is one of them for the V-6 and one for the V-8? Or is there another kit out there that I should use? Do I still use the 1485 kit with any of these? As much as I've read, I'm still confused by all the Carter/Weber/Edelbrock similarities and differences, not to mention auto vs. marine. This is my first time working on a marine motor, if you can't tell. :)

On a side note, what is the black paint on the Mercruiser engine? If I soak my carb in carb cleaner, will it remove it? Is it just for looks, or is it necessary for corrosion resistance? A few bits kinda flaking off anyway and it makes me nervous a bit will end up in an air bleed or something.

You shouldn't need a calibration kit, if this is the original carb that came on the boat. If it has a stock elec choke, it would have two step rods and different primary jets, then what is in the kit.

There should be a merc part number on the carb, with that and merc engine serial number, look on MercruiserParts.com for the correct kit number. Then you should be able to cross to mallory or other marine kit.

The accel pump is specific for marine.

The black paint is for corrosion resistance, and is thicker than simple spray paint. Soaking in carb cleaner will take more of it off. Someone might know what the specific merc paint is. If you use regular spray paint, use zinc chromate primer on any bare metal.

Thanks John. It wasn't originally an electric choke, it had the stove choke. But I can't seem to get it to work, so I'm converting it to electric. I'll check out the mercruiser.com site when I can get the carb number.

The Edelbrock carb kit will work just fine. Been there, done that many times...
