Howdy ya'll-
I've been haunting this place for the last 2 days as a guest. I was searching the internet for a possible "How To" on rebuilding my transom... the search engine brought me to ya'll
After reading through MANY, MANY, MANY intelligent and very informing topics/posts, I decided that if ya'll could do it; I could do it!!!
I could not find a specific topic covering John boats though. I read through Joeyplumley's rebuild and was amazed at what time and patience can produce. As a result, I have decided to tackle my OWN rebuild. Since I could not find a topic covering John boats specifically, I've decided to share my rebuild with ya'll through pictures and the such...
So, be forewarned, this topic will be picture heavy.
Now on to the rebuild!!!
I currently am the owner of a 1971 Sears John Boat, Model 1436. I am NOT the original owner and as far as I know, I believe I am the 3rd owner. Now, I live in Texas but I'm originally from Tennessee; which is where the boat originated. As such, I'm an avid duck hunter and have used this boat for primarily just that. It is powered by a 1976 Evinrude 15HP. My max GPS speed has been 14MPH. Mind you, its meant for hunting, not racing!!!!
Last season, my transom finally gave way. I can tell you this- it is not the FIRST transom replacement; however, I hope to do a much better job than the last one!!! See the "before" pictures and the tear down... feel free to comment- this is my FIRST transom rebuild; I'm sure I'll have questions and I'll definitely be open to suggestions!!!!
There will be lots of photos and most will be stored here: http://cid-7d441675d19b4f1f.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/John Boat Rebuild
I will try and pull a few select photos and share them here so you can see what I'm up to; for detailed photos, see the above link...
Wish me LUCK!!!
