Thanks HighTrim for the catch! Why it wouldn't start would have been a perplexing problem later.

I was so focused on getting that little hold-down clip installed I didn't pay attention to making sure I was orienting the float properly.

No problem. Has happened alot on here lately actually.

The tab at the base of the float arm above the needle/seat has to point down when the carb is orientated like you have it in the pic. It controls the amount of drop, so is adjustable.

An afternoon of fun. Reinstalled the carb float so the little tab can do its job. And did the fuel pump conversion, which included tapping a hole for the first time - came out good.
