Re: Rebuild Plans

when looking for a block would any 350 block work, is there a certain range of year/generation/2 bolt vs 4 bolt.... anything like that make it easier or not? My first plans on a used mercruise block fell through, so looking for block/head combo, i know to look for the vortec heads but any specific things to look for in the block.

Ayuh,.... Just what are puttin' this motor into,..??

What drive is on the hull,..??

What Vintage is it,..??

Do you have all the Dressin's off the old motor,..??

What is the induction yer usin',..?? Carb,..?? Efi,..?? Mpi,..??

Basically, 'bout Any SBC can be made to fit,....
But if We knew where yer headed with it, yer life could be Easier...

If the motor I put in the quote above is where yer headed, the Easiest way to go, is with a '96, 'n up motor...

98 Bayliner Capri.

Alpha One gen II

Vintage?

Can have the dressing but willing to upgrade intake/4 barrel carb

Currently 2 barrel carb

Looking to make a 300HP fresh rebuild, with mainly stock internals as from previous question/answer there is no mods to make worth performance gains. I would like to slowly build this over the summer months and next winter I’m thinking of taking engine out and replacing my transom.

I got the boat on a trade and the floor with a couple stringer were bad so I replaced the back half of the boat, any stringers that were bad.... time ran out (got deployed with the Army) and I had to skip out on the transom..... I saw signs of potential problem but I needed to dig a little deeper to confirm but from what I saw I didn’t see anything that jumped out 100% saying I’m screwed, but since I replaced the floor I might as well finish the job and replace the transom and I will know the back half of the boat is good for many years to come.

Since the motor will be out and there is unknown hours on motor so great time to replace the engine with a fresh one. I would love to upgrade outdrive but that is bigger leap in cost so..... I have to stick with a 350ci..... near the 300HP range. So with that said I’m looking to do the rebuild and as I have learned that buying a rebuild engine long block would be $3.5k-4.5k depending on the goodies, but would get me near the 300HP, but I’m sure I can save some money by rebuilding with local machine shop. As I have learned that most stock internal 350ci (truck style (vortec)) engine will do just fine. Make sure I get marine camshaft and intake/carb.....all other external parts can be swapped from old engine to new and any cheaper parts can be replaced for convenience (water pump). I want to find out if doing the engine myself is worth the savings or is the cost for convenience worth buying a prepared short/long block from a buisness that deals with replacement marine engines.

Ayuh,.... Have you done Any testin' on the current motor,...

Ya know, compression test, leak-down test,..??

Odds are, yer tryin' to rebuild a Perfectly Good motor....

Anyways,.... yer Vintage is 1998, so if ya want a different block/ motor to start with, ya want a 1996 or newer, to make it easier...

Re: Rebuild Plans

Perfectly good maybe, when I looked into the valve covers I say some milky drops of what I was thinking water in the oil..... now with this info and the tight time crunch I had to get the boat back together and out of the garage before I left country I took the boat to a mechanic to have the carb rebuilt and ignition replaced and oil changes and basic tune up stuff, which he didn’t say anything but after the one weekend I got to use the boat before I left county I noticed the milky white drops sitting on top of the heads..... So I’m planning for the worse and the reason I would prefer a fresh motor I can care for from the beginning. I would feel a little safer that way. Plus if it is a good engine I would be able to get more money out of the resale of the used motor.

I return home Mayish from my deployment and my first thing I want to do I get the boat from the lake house and put it back in the garage and finish up some smaller tasks I didn’t get to before I deployed and I will then look into the compression test, check oil more closely, change bellows, impeller..... More maintenance stuff and start the process of life on parts that need to be kept track of.

Ayuh,.... Above all,... Thank you very much for yer service to Our country....

As for the milkiness you saw,...
It's just Condensation, 'n nothin' more...

Boat motors do that all the time,...
Milkiness under the valve covers at the dock, but when ya take it out, 'n Run it, it steams off....

If ya had a cracked block, the oil level would rise, when ya run it...

Re: Rebuild Plans

Well if the compression test confirms all is good on the inside then i would feel a lot better, ii read time and time again that when the oil turned then something was on its way out....head gasket, warped heads or something..... And with the idea of replacing transom next winter i wanted to have a plan for the motor and prepare for the hole 9 yards..... But after testing when i return maybe all i need is to have fun with the boat this summer and worry about the motor when it really lets loose. Im just a motor head and always want more and want to max out what i can with the alphaOne drive......Wish the cost from Alpha to Bravo wasnt so steep!

Thank you for all the help on the info i feel when i return i will have a much easier time narrowing down the search and selection of parts to look for.

Ayuh,.... I too, am an ole Motorhead,...

Just slap on an Edlebrock 1409, 'n manifold, then go have Fun,...

The Alpha will take quite a Beatin',....
Goin' Bravo would be really outa place on a Bayliner Capri...

Save that thought for After you've out grown the Capri...
