Re: Rebuild of a 1978 22' Starcraft Islander

And A few more. Once spring gets here I will post some of the interior as it has also changed. New floor all new electronics, new seat bases, Lots of new parts. I have a total of just over $1500 into the boat with my initial investment of $500 I paid for the boat I traded to get this one. So I have $2000 into this and my time. It has a 165 horse mercruiser with a pre alpha outdrive. the outdrive was rebuilt three years ago and the motor was rebuilt two years ago. I can't wait for spring.

Hey cool, another Islander!

Or, huh??? Hmmmm.....

I am looking at your photos and it's almost like a couple of boats put together maybe???

The hull strikes me as a SS V5 hull.

The upper cabin strikes me as a later model Islander (much later than 78').

Then the piece in between seems to be an add on to mate the two.

Or, am I way off??:confused::confused:

Either way, cool project!

Edit: Or maybe not, just checked the 82' brochure.

Edit#2: One of my Starcraft bros pointed out that the V5 hull were in other models that just the SS.

So, super cool! A V5 Islander!:D:D

Could be the custom paint job throwing everything off. It took a lot of hours to sand the old paint that the last owner used a roller to put on, Off the boat and get the new stuff on the boat. I don't know what possess' a person to use a roller to paint metal especially a deep nap roller. I wanted something that looked a little different thats why I didn't paint it the original way. Didn't want it to look like every other islander out there.

Yep, I would say Jas is right. That is a V5 hull. If you study the brochures in the Starcraft forum (Thread at the top) you will see they did make the SuperSports, Islanders, and Holiday's with V5 hulls. There doesn't seem to be any consistancy as to what models got the V5 for a particular year. The V5 came out in 1978. Mine was only made 2 years. Also they made a 14' V5 Holiday, but I don't think they ever made a 16' V5 in anything.

You may already know this, but, I will bet there is "pour in foam" under your floor. Have you had the floor up?

You gas tank looks the same as mine, just a little farther forward because of you I/O. 50 gallons?

You boat looks to be in very nice condition. Good work. I hope to have a trailer as nice as yours someday.

IMO, you have a very rare boat.

Yeah I put an all new floor in it. And it had pour in foam under it and has it again. I took it out to check the rivets and such and replaced it with new. From what I can tell by my measurements it is a 60 gallon. Thanks for the compliment. Next spring I will get some pics of the interior. I also totally redid the trailer with all new led lights, new brake lines, and new winch, strap, hitch, safety chains, safety cable, and new running lights. Only two things left for the trailer and that is to mount my electric winch and to put new tires on it.
All that is left for the interior of the boat is to build a new door for the cuddy, make the flip up seats for the back of the boat, Repair the cabin cover, and rebuild the engine cover (i.e. New plywood and new carpeting). Oh and mount a couple more rod holders.

Nice work man. The boat is looking great.

You just reminded me to get rod holders as well. I'll probably do the Scotty rod holders that have an attachment to mount the inflated boat fenders as well.

Welcome aboard. I see you on Lake St. Clair Network and have been meaning to invite you over. There are a couple more guys that frequent both sites here. From my hometown Roseville too, lots of Michigan guys on here. The guys on this site are really helpful and pretty good sports about helping each other out. Check out the restorations here, they do some pretty fine work.

I bought an 18 1/2 footer in January of 2010 but didn't quite make it out on the lake last year. This spring I'll be out there for sure.

Best of luck,

Don

That boat looks great, I had one just like it I bought and restored. I turned mine into a dive boat and love it. You did a good job, how are you going to do the floor?
