Re: rear ended

Our insurance companies are also required to notify the state if our insurance is cancelled due to non-payment.

And let me tell you, they do. I sold a small scooter a while back and of course let the insurance lapse. I go to the DMV to renew my license and come to find out I had been driving with a flag on my license for almost 6 months!! Nobody told me that the effing insco's tell the state your insurance lapses, but when I call them and say "Look I got a new motorcycle, insure this one instead" that they don't ask if I sold the other one!! Why not report ALL THE FACTS???? Nobody ever told me (and I don't think it's required) to tell the DMV that you sold a vehicle. They should be able to tell seeing it registered in another state and not reported stolen.

Re: rear ended

My wife and I have only had three automotive related insurance events in the 20 years we have known each other. None of them were our fault.

Two had risk insurance, one of which had been canceled due to late payments. The other uninsured.

I had to personally collect on the canceled guy and only got half the money.

One lawsuit against the uninsured that never went anywhere due to the fact that he had filed for bankruptcy - basically get in line..

Coincidence.. I think not.

Let me add this because I know it is true from my own experience. You can sue the person for damages if he has no insurance and GET a judgement. Problem is the law says you cant collect a dime from them if "they have dependant children living with them under the age of 18" Seems that making them pay could cause an economic problem with care for the children so YOU CANT COLLECT

Re: rear ended

I find that a big fat tow hitch protects my car when it is rear ended and it supplies instant punishment to the rear ender...
I was told that in NY it is illegal to drive around with the hitch sticking out. I do it anyway and the cops never have pulled me over.
