Really? (NADA)

I understand that the NADA is a poor choice to try to pin down the value of a boat, but I have taken recently to checking there just as a means of comparison.

In comparing Sea Rays from '89-'90, I have found that an 18 footer with the 4.3 comes out valued considerably (in my terms :)) more than 20 footers because NADA puts so much value on the engine upgrade.

Can't be true, can it? The 20 footer with the same engine's got to be worth more, even if it's the base engine, huh?

Or am I doing something wrong (besides looking in the NADA )

Your entire post answers your entire question. The funny thing is that you know that . . . :p :)

I dont believe in NADA at ALL! I have compared Pick up trucks , boats and snowmobiles side by side with what said items are actually going for in this area , and they are usually not even close. My experience is that NADA value is usually lower then the actuall local market price.

You said it, "Means of comparison" Don't try to over analyze what you find in NADA. You will lose the rest of your hair. Find the boat you like, check NADA, then go compare the boats yourself. What ever one seems right to you, is probably alot more accurate than what you find in the NADA.

Thanks for the replies. Good advice, cuz I've got so little hair left to lose.

Re: Really? (NADA)

If I could get what NADA says my boat is worth, even the low retail, I would sell it in a heartbeat. Anybody wanna give me $8500 for my 01 Tahoe Q7 with the 5.7l??? Hell, the bimini top I paid $150 for added $245 to the value. LOL

NADA is a complete joke when it comes to boats. It is way worse than cars and trucks. At least they are a little closer to reality.

Where do you suppose they get these numbers anyway?? I always thought they took an average of what they actually sold for and used that, but I cant beleive anybody is selling them for this much money.

NADA values on 20 year old boats are about as relevent as the average US female weight is to 20 year old Victoria's Secret models .....

On older boats around here, I think if you can find one for NADA you'd buy it in a hearbeat. Prices considerably outreach NADA "values".

Re: Really? (NADA)

Nobody likes it (NADA) but it's at least a source that buyers and sellers can refer to as a starting point. What else do you have- Yachtworld? LOL. The reason it took the seller of my 'new' 1997 Four Winns 2 months to accept my scum-sucking-bottom-feeder offer of $15K, is that there were a half dozen of the same boat listed on YW at prices ranging from $29-39K!!

Yeah, right- like a 14-year-old mid-quality boat is still worth 2/3-3/4 of what it cost new

When I showed him that NADA value of that boat is $19-20K, but his manifolds and risers are long overdue for replacement (and THAT's why I'm offering $15K), I think it demonstrated that my offer might not be totally out in left field.

I see boat after boat sit unsold for months (even years) because the owners simply don't have a clue. NADA, however inaccurate it might be, at least provides some common ground for discussion.

When I bought my 24' boat which was 2 years old at the time, The NADA was $28K and I purchased my boat for $20K. In this case NADA was way too high.

Same here. NADA on my boat / trailer was about 25% high. Maybe it's a California thing...

Re: Really? (NADA)

There are far fewer boats sold than cars, so the NADA boat pricing model is national rather than regional (by zip code). That's partly why there's such a wide disparity in boat prices depending on where you live, the popularity of a particular type of boat, etc.

In my area bowriders and boats under 18' aren't that plentiful/popular and don't command top dollar. Fishing boats (CC's and WA's) and 'pocket cruisers' still bring a pretty good price. It's hard to negotiate a truly killer deal on a boat that's popular in your area.

I managed to do that when I bought the Chris*Craft at the end of 2008, but the market then was at rock bottom and nobody was buying anything. I think I made a very good deal on the 27' Four Winns, but not what I'd consider spectacular.

The word "GUIDE" should be a tip-off. It is a guide -- not a bible.

Re: Really? (NADA)

They get the numbers from the state records when a boat is sold. Just stop and think how many 10 or 15 year old boats are given away for a song. It deffinately drops the average selling price.

(Of course there are some folks out there that give the state a low number to avoid sales taxes. :D )

As to the difference in engines, I think they are spot on. Take a look at how much an engine upgrade costs in a new boat. Also consider that with a used $5000 boat at least half the value is the engine/drive should you scrap the boat.

Well, that is kind of what I am getting at. I bought my boat for $2100. The NADA on it was over $15k at the time. So how does it average out that high when people are selling boats cheap, and flubbing the numbers at the tax office? that would mean that someone bought the same boat I have for over $20k or more to get the average that high?

Like I said, for $8500, which is low NADA, I would sell in a heartbeat. For high retail I would deliver it to South Dakota!!

Just a thought (I really don't know) but isn't NADA a dealer's database? Do NADA boat prices reflect what's been purchased from dealers and brokers? If that's the case, pricing should be pretty accurate. I've never bought anything (car or boat) from a dealer who was willing to fudge the taxable amount of the sale.

NADA for my Charger which I got a respectable deal on was nearly spot on. Same boat would have cost a few grand more down here since bass boats are in higher demand than where I bought it in Central Missouri. Even looks like it had been garage kept for most of its life!

Out here the 18' bowrider is about 75% of the market on CL. So many idjits with HELOCS bought "starter" boats between 2004-2007 that the market is flooded with them now. Same goes for Cuddy's, but for different reasons, at least in the Central Valley where a cuddy without A/C is just a portable sauna half the year.

Once you get over 20', pricing stabilizes and starts to make sense, and I missed out on 3 great boats because I wasn't the first or second caller. Damn happy with what I got, so no regrets. You can get a 2006 SeaRay 18' BR with under 80 hours for about 10K-12K right now (probably cheaper, now that it REALLY the off season)

Location is everything. For a very limited example, here in the midwest (Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin) 1700 and 1800 Lund Pro Vs are going for 20 to 25% over NADA. This partly due to the fact that Lund doesn't make the 1700 and 1800 anymore. Anyway the demand appears to be there.

Dead on target location location location, also there are other factors to consider, economy and type of lakes nearby, if you don't like what you find around you look around other boating locations the market there can be very different.
