There is a house I pass on my way to work. The guy there lives about 5 miles from me. Towards the end of summer I guess he bought a new or newer boat. It is a larger Sea Doo. One that looks like a real boat. The boat is red and he had it hooked to his truck which is also red. They are a perfect match and I thought that the combo was a beautiful setup. Since it cooled off he has had the boat sitting in his yard beside his house under a tree, uncovered. I cringe every time I go by. It was 0 degrees last week and there it sat. How do people do it. I park outside and scrape ice so the boat can set in the garage. If we get back from the lake and the boat is outside I am uncomfortable until the boat is back inside. I know it's none of my business but I want to stop by and tell him he needs to at least cover it up. Maybe he doesn't know. Anyone else feel this way.

I have no option but to keep mine outside. I don't have a garauge and it would be too big anyways. With that said it is at a storage lot with no trees and a cover on it. Though right now there is no cover on it (had to take it off) it started raning and I did not want to cover a wet boat. I figure a week or two in the sun won't hurt anything.

There is a boat in the neighborhood, stored with the outdrive up, prop all messed up, on a trailer with tags from 09. It drives me crazy. The boat was bought new in 90 and never cleaned and the trailer never re-registered. I think some people just live in ignorant bliss until something fails on their boat.

You might want to stop one day and tell him that you like his boat and truck combo. That will start a conservation. While you look at the boat you might want to ask about how he winterized it, etc. and then bring up the importance of covering the boat.

agreed, a cover should be used at minimum. But, the boat is nothing more than a PWC shaped like a boat. I see PWC's in back yards covered in snow (minus cover) all the time. Does not make it right though.

I also pass a dealer that sells Malibu boats. I don't know how they do what they do. They have probably 30 something boats. Most of them are 100k plus. Any day that is sunny when I go by, the boats are uncovered with the bimini tops up. When I come back by in the evening they are tightly covered. Some of these boats are 2013 models and have been sitting on the lot for over a year. The boats will be worn out from putting tops up and covering and uncovering 6 days a week for a year. They do keep them covered when not on display though. Hard to believe how much those Malibu's are.

That's part of the story right there. You don't see your boat as equipment made for outdoor use. And there are a lot of boats sold to non-boaters that can't handle outdoor use (those "boats" are like putting your living room sofa out by the pool).

other boaters regard their boats like they do their cars and trucks--equipment to be used and enjoyed as intended, and leaving it in the yard is OK. There are lots of boats that do fine uncovered in the off season and a simply pressure washing brings it back to clean and ready to go.

However, I have to agree somewhat with your perspective because (a) it sounds like he has a nice-looking boat that may not hadle outdoor storage well, and also (b) parking any boat under trees unconvered causes more dirt/stain build-up than a good cleaning can reverse--and covering is such an easy solution. IOW he doesn't have to go to the extreme that you choose to do, but a little effort would go a long way.

Around here the dealers leave some of the boats outside uncovered all year long. Some are just under a shed roof. But they don't need covers, adn some are better without them, since covers trap moisture and work like a solar still inside.

The cost to cover your boat properly in the off season is easily added to sale price. That's a no brainer when you are selling to anyone who knows boats. If any prospective buyer balked at the cover and the cost, I would just explain this or ask them to leave. Not protecting your investment, well there is no excuse for that other than ignorance.
All my boats have covers or are in the garages. That goes for trucks, snowmobiles trailers, everything!! LOL I have more garages than most, 3 of them curently, with two of them being 4 car in size. What's crazy is I'm getting ready to build a pole barn to consolidate!!

Have to chime in,,,,,, nothing good happens leaving a boat uncovered for a long period of time.. Here in the north, I also drive by boats I see parked in yards with piles of snow inside.. can only shake my head... I do not have a large enough garage for mine, it's outside, on blocks jacked up to take about 70% of the weight off the tires, a snap cover on it, pole extended inside for drainage , over that is a full cover tarp to the ground. I took some inexpensive clothes line and wrapped it up like a hostage.. the cover does not flap in the wind, whenever we get a snow of note, I take my garage broom and push the snow off the cover to keep extra weight off the snaps,, otherwise the weight can blow those out......does not take a lot of time or expense to protect ones boat,, IF ONES WANTS TO.......

The dealer I bought my boat from had all of the inventory shrink wrapped. There was a door in the back of the shrinkwrap where you could climb on to the boat the check out the actual one you wanted after looking at the models.

If it really bugged me, and it wouldn't, that's a very good way to approach the issue.

Myself, I'd mind my own business unless asked for an opinion.

Agree

There's nothing you can do about it but I would also cringe the first few times I drove by. Then I would chuckle.

The lake we boat on it's common for people to buy the $20-30k jet ski pair and let them sit out at the dock uncovered, sometimes just tied up to the dock, no lift.

Just this fall my brother in law left his $25k searay sundeck out in a couple day long rain storm then wrapped it up tight with the mooring cover and brought it over to the storage barn for the winter. When I told him about how bad it is to put a boat away wet he responded with "only the carpet was wet so I took that out".

Very common practice for all our dealers in this area with boats stored outside

Look at the positive side.

If you ever attempt to sell your boat, his boat will not be an alternative consideration for the buyer.
That makes the market one boat smaller and your boat ever so slightly more valuable.

Some people do not have the capability to think except through their wallet. Good for the economy as he will be spending on repairs and maybe a new boat!
