Re-upholstering seat cushions- I need some help

I am re-doing my seat cushions as the threads have started to pop and the cushions are splitting. The vinyl itself is fine and I am simply resewing the seams with 65lb PowerPro. The foam inside is fine as well. However, to make them water-resistant I saw that the foam was in a plastic bag of some sort and that had deteriorated. I need to cover the foam with a plastic of some sort to keep the water out. I did the first cushion for my helm seats and didn't get it right because when you sit on the cushion, it stays blown up like a balloon. How do I vent the plastic to allow the foam to compress without making an entry way for the water? I'm puzzled as to how it works. Pretty dumb, huh?

UFM82

The plastic in your cushions may not be there to keep water out. They may be plastic bags used to compress the cushion during construction. The manufacturers use a vacuum and suck the air out of the bag to squeeze the cushion.

When I rebuilt my seats for my boat a just took the original plastic and stapled it to the back of the wood where the vinyl is stapled,(if you dont have the original just take some large plastic bags rip them to size and cover it. if you cant do that (such as the whole seat is covered with vinyl and the vinyl isnt satapled to wood)just cut a slit (not very big but not very small) in the plastic where there are no seams on the vinyl a slit should be big enough to let air out but small enough to keep water out also.

Usually there are holes in the wooden base under the seat to let air in & out.
